Your seasonal landscaping newsletter from Cabrera Landscapers
Hello, neighbors!
Fall is here in Dallas–Fort Worth! As temperatures cool, it’s time to give your outdoor space some seasonal attention. From refreshing garden beds to preparing irrigation systems for freezing weather, a few thoughtful steps can help your landscape transition into winter and prepare for the seasons ahead.
🍂 Put Fallen Leaves to Work
Turn fallen leaves into a useful landscape resource. Shredded leaves can be added to garden beds as mulch or placed in a compost pile. Refreshing mulch before the first hard freeze helps conserve moisture and protect plant roots from temperature extremes.
💧 Adjust Your Watering for Cooler Weather
Your lawn doesn’t need its summer watering schedule all year long. As warm-season grass slows its growth, reduce irrigation and account for rainfall. During winter dormancy, stop routine automatic watering and irrigate only when dry conditions make it necessary. Always follow local watering restrictions.
🌱 Be Smart About Fall Fertilizer
More fertilizer isn’t always better—especially late in the season. For warm-season lawns, Texas A&M AgriLife recommends applying the final nitrogen fertilizer no later than six weeks before the area’s historical first frost. A soil test can help identify what your lawn actually needs instead of guessing. If you missed the fall window, avoid a last-minute nitrogen application.
❄️ Prepare Before Freezing Weather Arrives
Locate your irrigation shutoff and drainage valves before you need them. Have freeze-vulnerable irrigation components checked and properly winterized, and insulate exposed outdoor pipes and faucets before a hard freeze. The right preparation depends on your system, so arrange a professional assessment rather than guessing which components need draining.
🌿 Give Garden Beds Some Attention
Remove weeds and dead or unwanted plants, and replenish protective mulch where needed. Avoid fertilizing perennials simply to encourage fresh growth late in the season—tender new foliage can be vulnerable to frost and freeze damage.
🏡 Start Your Spring Project List
While your landscape is fresh in your mind, make a wish list for the year ahead. Would a new patio improve your outdoor living space? Is there a drainage concern you want evaluated? Are you considering refreshed planting beds or irrigation improvements?
Now is a great time to start the conversation with Cabrera Landscapers and plan your next outdoor project.
